Ebook About The third Culture novel from the awesome imagination of Iain M. Banks, a modern master of science fiction. The man known as Cheradenine Zakalwe was one of Special Circumstances' foremost agents, changing the destiny of planets to suit the Culture through intrigue, dirty tricks or military action. The woman known as Diziet Sma had plucked him from obscurity and pushed him towards his present eminence, but despite all their dealings she did not know him as well as she thought. The drone known as Skaffen-Amtiskaw knew both of these people. It had once saved the woman's life by massacring her attackers in a particularly bloody manner. It believed the man to be a burnt-out case. But not even its machine intelligence could see the horrors in his past.Praise for the Culture series:'Epic in scope, ambitious in its ideas and absorbing in its execution' Independent on Sunday'Banks has created one of the most enduring and endearing visions of the future' Guardian'Jam-packed with extraordinary invention' Scotsman'Compulsive reading' Sunday Telegraph The Culture series:Consider PhlebasThe Player of GamesUse of WeaponsThe State of the ArtExcessionInversionsLook to WindwardMatterSurface DetailThe Hydrogen SonataOther books by Iain M. Just incredible. Violent, Philosophical, Hilarious, Tragic. Give it some time, it develops into a story that is deeply human and compelling. Compared to other culture novels, like Consider Phlebas which has to take some time setting up the technical details of this nearly limitless universe, this one is alot lighter on sci-fi concept, description of tech, space, gadgetry, and science. Of course in the culture universe the tools and tactics are elaborately explored, but in the end most conflicts are solved with human grit and ingenuity rather than weapons. This volume develops the human side of things really well. Borders on the absurd in terms of blood, gore, bodily injury. From a speculative sci-fi perspective this is explored in medical terms, furthering a goal beyond simple shock value. One of the few pure sci-fi books whose characters, narrative, and dialog I will have seared into my memory along with the great storytelling of literary fiction. Ending is an absolute heartbreaker. Having just finished reading this novel for the second time, after the first time about 25 years ago, I’m revising my stars from 5 to 4 because, while the novel is very well constructed, it is also a difficult read. It took me several weeks to slog through the first 90% of the book. It was just very difficult to follow what was going on, and how the several scenes and storylines were related. 25 years ago, when I first read this novel, I was in college and I was actually a English major and maybe back then I was more available and open to this kind of dense literature. But now in my mid-50s, maybe I’m just tired of having to work so hard. The conclusion is the apex of the story, and that’s what I have remembered about this book for 25 years. But the twist — and here’s a spoiler — that our narrator is unreliable, I do not remember from 25 years ago. So that was a nice surprise, and made me want to go back and read the whole damn story again to find out if there were clues to this twist, and also to revisit the alternating chapters to see if I can find out who is the real protagonist. So, while the story is extremely intriguing and dense, I just don’t think I have the time and energy left in my days to slog back through this novel yet again and actually do the investigation that this powerful story warrants. I shall, perhaps, do some web research to see if others have already done the digging for me.
